The Bank of Okeechobee is One Big Art Mural

Some places make you stop in your tracks and in Okeechobee, Florida, one of those places is the historic Bank of Okeechobee building.

At first glance, it looks like you’re peering straight into another era. But what you’re actually seeing is the incredible mural, Looking Back Through The Windows Of Time, a larger-than-life tribute to the town’s past that transforms this old yellow brick landmark into one of the most interesting sights in town.

A Building With a Story to Tell

Built in 1923, the historic structure once served as the Bank of Okeechobee, but only briefly. The bank operated there for just three years before closing during the Florida land boom crash of 1926. Like many old buildings with rich histories, it later sat boarded up and forgotten for years.

Thankfully, its story didn’t end there.

Public Art That Brought History Back to Life

In 2012, artist Joseph Steiert completed the stunning mural that now wraps around the building. Sponsored by Gil and Marie Culbreth as part of the Okeechobee Main Street initiative, the project was designed to breathe new life into the space while honoring Okeechobee’s heritage.

Using the building’s real windows and doors, the mural creates the illusion of bustling storefronts, busy sidewalks, and bank scenes from 1924 to 1950. Look closely and you’ll notice patrons, businesses, and moments from everyday life painted so realistically that it feels like the town’s past is still alive behind the glass.

Why It’s Worth Seeing

This isn’t just a mural, it’s a time capsule in plain sight.

It turns an ordinary downtown corner into something memorable and gives visitors a glimpse into what life might have looked like nearly a century ago. It’s the kind of place that makes you pause, take photos, and appreciate how creativity can preserve local history in a way plaques and textbooks never could.

A Little Mystery Adds to the Charm

Rumor has it the building has also been beautifully restored inside and is sometimes used for private events. That only adds to the intrigue of this building, and I really, really hope it's true.

If You’re Passing Through Okeechobee…

Don’t just drive by. Stop and take a closer look at this remarkable building. The Bank of Okeechobee mural proves that sometimes the most interesting attractions aren’t your typical tourist traps. Instead, they’re hidden in small towns, painted on old brick walls, waiting to tell their stories.
